Teaching Kid's to Save Their MoneyIt never fails, when you go to the store or superstore your child says before you even get out of the car "can I have that?" Most of the time you think whatever gets the trip done faster. It all started innocently enough with the cheap toys, but now there could be no end in sight. Which I don't deny is totally all my fault for ever starting this bad but convenient habit. I have finally found a solution. Much to my surprise what a couple of jars could do for my problem. First take two or three mason jar type jars or plastic containers depending on your child's age, clean and let dry. Next gather glitter, colored paper, magazine clippings, markers, macaroni, glue and whatever else sounds good to your kids. Have them decorate each jar for the money they will be saving. Such as: if they want new toys decorate the jar with car cutouts from magazines or Barbie pictures and just have fun with the project. You can even decorate the lids, have the adult to cut a slit in the top to easily drop in their money. You are on your way. Next the teaching step, the child needs to understand why they have decorated the jars. They need to learn the value of money. The next time you go to the store and your child asks for something, show them how much it costs. This way when they start saving they will know how much money they need to get what they want. Let the child see that when they get paid for chores or get birthday money they should divide the money up into the jars accordingly. If one jar is for "I would like to have that" then put part of the money in that jar. If jar two is for "presents to take to friends birthday parties" then part of the money needs to go in that jar. If jar three is for "charity" then part of their money needs to go in that jar. Now the next time you go to the store and your child says "Can I have that?" you can say "Have you saved enough money to buy that yet?" Make sure that you reward their good efforts, offer to take them to a special place to spend their money. This will make saving fun and a life long good behavior choice for your child. In return you can probably save yourself money. Good luck and happy saving. |
