How and When Do I Start Potty Training?

By K. Decker

It is different for each child when they decide to start potty training. The average aged child that is potty trained is between two and three. Many parents worry that their child should already be potty trained. When in fact, the more you pressure a child, they retreat further.

Just be aware that children want to be independent; look for ways to help this along. Toddlers that are ready to start the training experience will start to hold it longer. The best way to kick this off is to be relaxed in your approach. If it becomes a struggle, you will lose. Ask yourself, "is my child ready" when:

* She can stay dry for two or more hours at a time.
* Can stay dry during a nap.
* She can follow instructions.
* You can tell when she needs to use the bathroom by her expressions.
* Her bowel movements are regular.
* She can get to the bathroom by herself.
* She lets you know that she has gone potty or that she is wet.
* She want to wear big girl pants.
* She asks to use the potty.

When your child starts giving you these signals it is time to get started. Remember to not be too pushy. Start out by letting the child know when she needs to potty go to the potty. Show her how it all works. If she seems to not be ready, go back to diapers for a couple of weeks and then try again. Positive praise works well with this, even if she doesn't use the potty right away. If says she needs to go but just doesn't make it, still praise her for the effort. Stickers and charts sometimes help. Maybe put the chart on the bathroom door or wall and when she goes potty she can put up a sticker of her choice. Make the chart with: "I went potty", I' wiped", "I went poo-poo", "I flushed", "I washed my hands" and "I did it all by myself". When she fills that section of the chart reward her with a special treat or trip somewhere. Make it a special time for your child and she will be potty trained in no time at all. Most of all Good Luck!!
